शल्य - चिकित्सा के जनक
सुश्रुत
सुश्रुत विश्वामित्र के पुत्र थे । विश्वामित्र कान्यकुब्ज राजवंश के राजा थे । उन्होंने अपनी तपस्या के बल पर ब्राह्मणत्व प्राप्त किया । उनके पुत्र सुश्रुत की आयुर्वेद में काफी दिलचस्पी रही । उन्होंने आयुर्वेद के ग्रंथ ' सुश्रुत संहिता ' की रचना की , जिसमें आयुर्वेद के अंगों का वर्णन किया गया है । उन्होंने शल्य चिकित्सा पर गंभीर लेखन किया । सुश्रुत का नाम चरक के समकक्ष माना जाता है । ' सुश्रुत संहिता ' घायलों की शल्य - क्रिया का उन्नत ग्रंथ है । इस ग्रंथ में नाक , कान एवं होंठ आदि की प्लास्टिक सर्जरी का भी वर्णन है । शल्य - क्रिया के दौरान उपयोग किए जाने वाले औजारों की भी जानकारी दी गई है । इस प्रकार सुश्रुत को शल्य - चिकित्सा का जनक माना जाता है।

English translation :-
Sushruta, the father of surgery,
Sushruta was the son of Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra was the king of the Kanyakubja dynasty. He attained Brahmanism on the strength of his penance. His son Sushruta was very much interested in Ayurveda. He composed the book 'Sushruta Samhita' of Ayurveda, which describes the organs of Ayurveda. He did serious writing on surgery. Sushruta's name is considered equivalent to Charaka. 'Sushruta Samhita' is an advanced treatise for the surgery of the injured. Plastic surgery of nose, ear and lips etc. is also described in this book. Information about the tools used during surgery is also given. Thus Sushruta is considered the father of surgery.
